Despite the US banning Huawei from trading with its domestic firms, the Chinese tech giant is pressing ahead with new smartphone launches. Huawei has announced the Nova 6 series that’s formed of three phones: the Nova 6 5G, Nova 6 and Nova 6 SE. Just like the Mate 30 Pro, after you see the phones and hear about their specs, you’ll be wishing they had support for Google apps and services, too.
Just like previous Huawei smartphone series’, the Nova 6 is formed of three phones that are designed to appeal to varying Android fans. The Nova 6 5G is a souped-up flagship that’s capable of delivering next-generation network speeds, the regular Nova 6 comes with all the same features as its 5G brother… bar 5G. Finally the Nova 6 SE is a more affordable device that comes with a less powerful processor and a different camera system.
The hardware of the regular Nova 6 and Nova 6 5G is superb. The handsets both come with a 6.57-inch display with a pill-shaped cutout à la Galaxy S10+. Within the hole, Huawei has placed a 32-megapixel main camera and a secondary 8-megapixel ultra wide-angle snapper that can be used to fit more of your friends and family in a single shot. The front camera duo work extremely similarly to that offered by the Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL.
On the rear of either the Nova 6 or Nova 6 5G you’ll find three cameras: a 40-megapixel primary, an 8-megapixel telephoto and an 8-megapixel ultra wide-angle sensor. Together, the trio should deliver a diverse camera system similar to the Mate 30 Pro, Galaxy S10 and iPhone 11 Pro.
Huawei hasn’t held back on the internals of the Nova 6 and Nova 6 5G, either. Both handsets are powered by the tech giant’s in-house Kirin 990 chipset with the 4G-only variant leveraged by the former and the full fat 5G model utilised by the latter.
In short, that means both phones should deliver excellent performance across the board and won’t break a sweat when playing graphically intense games or opening a multitude of different apps at once. Huawei’s Kirin 90 is accompanied by 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB of storage.
Both devices should be able to deliver at least a full day of usage thanks to the Nova 6 5G’s 4,200mAh battery and the Nova 6’s 4,100mAh cell.
Just like other Huawei flagships, the Nova series comes in a multitude of different colours ranging from bright red to a gradient finish with purple and blue tones.
Every member of the Nova 6 series will come pre-installed with Android 10, but of course there won’t be any Google apps or services available.
At the moment Huawei’s newest devices are only confirmed to launch in China and will start at 3199 Chinese Yuan (£344) for the regular Nova 6 and 3799 Chinese Yuan (£409) for the model with 5G support.
It’s currently unclear if Huawei has plans to release either device in Western markets. But of course, Express.co.uk will update you if this changes.
