Is Your Narcissistic Mate Really Schizoid? - Psychology Today

If you have been searching the internet for an explanation of your romantic partner’s bad behavior, you are likely to have noticed that there is a tendency to attribute almost anything negative to Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD).  Unfortunately, most of the people who are calling other people narcissistic are not trained in the differential diagnosis of personality disorders. This means that they are over-diagnosing people as narcissists, when another type of psychological problem might be a better explanation for the behavior.  A common mistake is to overlook the possibility that the mate actually suffers from schizoid personality disorder, not Narcissistic personality disorder. Let me give you an example.

The case of Liz and Bob

My new client Liz entered therapy with me because she had recently discovered that her husband Bob was having an affair. Liz was shocked and devastated.  They had been married for only ten months and Bob had pursued Liz for years begging her to marry him. It made no sense to Liz that he was cheating on her now that they were finally together.

Their history:  Liz had been married to someone else when she met Bob at a party.  They enjoyed talking to each other and found that they had a lot in common.  After the party, Bob started reaching out to Liz.  He began small.  He started following her on Instagram.  He began to “like” her posts on social media.  He sent her cute texts. Gradually, it became clear to Liz that Bob wanted more than a friendship.

When Liz told Bob that she was happily married and uncomfortable with the romantic turn their relationship was taking, Bob confessed that he had fallen madly in love with her and could not think about anyone else. He believed that they were meant to be together.  He said that he had never felt like this before about anyone.  Bob then started relentlessly pursuing her.  Eventually, seduced by his passion, thoughtful gifts, and many demonstrations of his love for her, Liz gave in and started an affair with Bob.  But that was not enough for him.  Bob said that he wanted all of her, not just sex with her.  He then spent two years trying to convince her to divorce her husband and marry him.

Liz finally gave in to Bob’s pleading and left her husband for him.  Everything was blissful until her divorce came through and she and Bob got married.  Soon after their honeymoon, it was as if a switch turned off and Bob suddenly lost all interest in her.  He started to find ways to emotionally and physically distance himself.  He even took a new job that required him to travel more for work.  When Liz confronted him about his sudden emotional absence, he denied that anything had changed and told her that she was imagining things.

Liz happened to glance at Bob’s phone while he was in the shower and found passionate texts from another woman on it.  Liz was stunned.  Her whole world was collapsing. She started looking up “cheating husbands” and “sudden loss of interest in mate” on the internet.  She came across multiple sites that all said that these were characteristics of narcissistic husbands and that now that the “love bombing” was over, she should expect to be devalued and discarded any day now.  She chose me as a therapist because of how often my name came up as someone very knowledgeable about narcissism and relationships.

But…was Bob really a narcissist?  Did he qualify for a diagnosis of narcissistic personality disorder?

Liz was surprised that I did not immediately jump on the narcissistic bandwagon.  I continued to ask her questions about her husband, his childhood, his past relationships, and his behavior.  I began to think that a different diagnosis might actually be a better fit.  I asked Liz if I could do a private session with her husband to get a personal impression and ask him some questions.  When I met Bob, I realized that he did not have a narcissistic personality disorder.  It was much more likely that Bob had a schizoid personality disorder.  In order to explain why, let me give you a brief introduction and comparison of these two very different personality disorders.

Please note, I will be using the terms “narcissist” and “schizoid” as shorthand ways of referring to people who qualify for a diagnosis of narcissistic personality disorder or schizoid personality disorder.

What is Narcissistic personality disorder?

There is a lot of information available on NPD, so I will only briefly touch on its main aspects.  NPD can be thought of as an adaptation to a childhood situation that left the person with a personality disorder characterized by unstable self-esteem and little or no emotional empathy for other people. Many of my narcissistic clients report growing up in a home ruled by a domineering narcissistic parent who they were expected to obey and idealize. High achievement was valued, while empathy and compassion were not.

  • Narcissistic goals:  The main goals of people with the exhibitionist narcissist subtype are to appear special, gain high status, become the center of admiring attention, and be acknowledged as the “best.” The main goals of the closet narcissist subtype are to avoid the spotlight and feel special by getting the approval of people that they idealize.  The main goals of the malignant narcissist subtype are to sadistically destroy the self-esteem and pleasure of other people.
  • Narcissistic fears:  All narcissists fear being exposed as inadequate, average, or imperfect. In addition, people with the closet narcissist subtype are unable to mobilize enough defensive grandiosity to present themselves as special.  They avoid the spotlight because being the center of attention makes them feel too exposed and vulnerable.
  • Dysfunctional relationship pattern:  Narcissists usually begin by idealizing their lovers and showering them with praise. Then as the couple gets to know each other better, the narcissistic partner starts finding flaws in his or her mate.  He or she may attempt to convince the new mate to change so as to better fit the narcissist’s idea of perfection. When that does not work, narcissists start to devalue their partner.  Praise is replaced by blame.  They may cheat on their now devalued mate or discard the person.  Instead of the passionate, idyllic love that they experienced during courtship, they now feel bored, annoyed, or indifferent — just when a normal person would start to relax and enjoy the growing intimacy that comes with familiarity.

What is Schizoid Personality Disorder?

Schizoid personality disorder (SPD) starts in early childhood as an adaptation by a particular child to a home situation that contained some combination of severe abuse, neglect, and intrusiveness by the child's caregivers. My schizoid clients are generally much more traumatized than my narcissistic clients. They report that by age seven they realized that they could not count on anyone to have their best interests at heart.  They decided at a young age that the safest and best choice was to become fully independent as soon as possible, control how much contact they have with other people, and be very cautious about whom they trust. Almost all of them learned to dissociate from their bodies when they felt abused as children and now automatically dissociate whenever they feel stressed, even when they do not want to do so.

  • Schizoid goals:  My schizoid clients want to maintain their autonomy and keep other people at what feels like a safe interpersonal distance.
  • The Schizoid dilemma:  Ralph Klein (1995), states that the basic schizoid dilemma is that schizoid individuals feel unsafe when they are in intimate relationships; but when they retreat to a safe distance, they may go too far and then find it difficult to reconnect with people.  When that happens, they are prone to falling into a very specific type of depression characterized by existential despair—the sense that life is inherently meaningless, and that real human connection is impossible.  Note how different this type of depression is from narcissistic depression which is primarily characterized by shame about the self.
  • Schizoid fears: The main schizoid fears involve loss of independence, being controlled by other people, being viewed as a tool to be used instead of as a real person with rights and feelings, and having their work or belongings appropriated by other people.
  • Dysfunctional relationship pattern:  People with SPD manage the level of intimacy by finding ways to keep their emotional distance.  This translates into having limited relationships, or by going in and out of relationships.  When there are no impediments to full intimacy, they may try to protect themselves by unconsciously shutting down their feelings. This last includes suddenly falling out of love with someone as soon as they become available for a real relationship.

A New Analysis of Bob

Bob’s behavior towards Liz could not be accounted for by the usual narcissistic relationship issues: problems with self-esteem regulation, inability to love, grandiosity, perfectionism, hierarchical thinking, status strivings, and a lack of emotional empathy. They were much better explained by the issues associated with schizoid personality disorder: fear of intimacy, a need to control interpersonal distance, and a concern that the only way not to be trapped and controlled was to dilute the intimacy by either choosing unavailable people or by introducing another person into the relationship.

You may wonder: Why does Bob’s diagnosis matter? He was still cheating on Liz and putting distance between them.  You cannot have a happy marriage that way.  However, a correct diagnosis can help you understand the underlying motives for the relationship problems and highlights the issues that need to be addressed.

In typically schizoid fashion, as soon as Bob married Liz and her former husband was no longer an impediment to full intimacy, Bob got scared and shut down his feelings.  He then took a lover in order to create even more distance between him and Liz.  Bob was not doing this because he had discovered that Liz was not perfect (a typically narcissistic reason).  He was not bored with Liz or devaluing her as a narcissist would.  His intimacy fears were being triggered by Liz’s availability and he was panicking and sabotaging the relationship.

Despite how hurt and betrayed Liz felt by Bob’s behavior, this situation was easier to treat than narcissistic devaluation would be.  Bob’s situation was not complicated by the narcissist’s need to be seen as flawless.  Once Bob had some insight into his own motives, he was able to work in therapy on overcoming his fear of being vulnerable to another human being.

Punchline: At this moment in time, narcissism is in the spotlight, while schizoid personality disorder and its effect on relationships is virtually unknown to the general public. Many hurtful behaviors are being attributed solely to narcissistic personality disorder, such as infidelity, sudden emotional or physical withdrawal, lack of intimacy, and sending mixed messages.  The reality is that these behaviors can also be the result of clumsy attempts by partners with Schizoid personality disorder to maintain a safe emotional distance.  The problem is that most people, even experienced psychotherapists, are unfamiliar with the common signs of schizoid personality disorder.  As a result, many people are screaming “narcissist!” when they should be whispering, “schizoid.”

Huawei Mate Xs Spotted on TENAA, Dual Mode 5G Network Tipped - Gadgets 360

Huawei Mate Xs foldable phone was spotted on 3C certification site last month, and now it has been spotted on TENAA with the same model number. The listing is yet to be populated with full specifications and images. The Huawei Mate Xs is reported to be cheaper than the Mate X, and will include adjustments in design as well. The Mate Xs has been spotted on TENAA with model number TAH-AN00m, and it is listed to come with 5G dual-band support.

The TENAA listing of the Huawei Mate Xs with model number TAH-AN00m reveals little as of now. The listing suggests that the phone will offer 5G connectivity with support for dual-band (NSA and SA) networks in China. Apart from this, there's little else that the Mate Xs TENAA listing reveals. The listing was first reported by GizmoChina.

As per past reports, the Huawei Mate Xs is expected to be unveiled at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2020 with an improved hinge design and a ‘stronger display'. It is expected to be cheaper than the Huawei Mate X foldable phone, which means it will be priced lesser than CNY 16,999 (roughly Rs. 1,76,000). The Huawei Mate Xs is also rumoured to sport a small overall footprint than the Mate X, but the display size should remain the same.

Huawei Consumer Group CEO Richard Yu has also seemingly confirmed that the Mate Xs will be powered by the Kirin 990 SoC, and will launch without access to Google services and apps. The phone's 3C certification listing mentions the foldable phone to support 65W fast charging as well. The phone appears to have Leica optics, just like the Mate X.

To recall, the Huawei Mate X was announced in February last year at MWC 2019, and the phone sports an OLED FullView Display panel on the outer body that helps transform the hardware into an 8-inch tablet. The phone is powered by the Kirin 980 SoC with a separate Balong 5000 modem to allow 5G connectivity.

Russian seals are struggling to mate as record high temperatures have prevented sea ice from forming - Daily Mail

Russian seals are struggling to mate as record high winter temperatures have prevented formation of sea ice where they copulate and give birth to pups

  • Grey seals and ring seals near St. Petersburg rely on seasonal sea ice to mate
  • Record high temperatures in January have kept the sea ice from forming
  • Seals have had no place to pair off and copulate, and many have struggle through rough waters to reach dangerously exposed shorelines instead

Record high temperatures in Russia this winter have become an obstacle for ringed seals and grey seals that live in the water near St. Petersburg.

These high temperatures have kept sea ice from forming on the Gulf of Finland  and Lake Ladoga, the two main bodies of water that surround St. Petersburg.

Seals in the region rely on the sea ice both to meet partners to mate with, and later to use to dig burrows where pregnant seals can safely birth and nurse pups, protected from predators and severe weather conditions.

Grey seals and ringed seals in northwestern Russia are struggling to mate at normal rates as record-breaking winter temperatures have prevented sea ice from forming, atop which seals normally pair off and copulate

Without sea ice, the seals have had to heed nature's call mostly in open waters, which could lead to lower birthrates and higher mortality rates for the pups that are born.

‘This year, not only is there no snow, but there isn’t even any ice on the sea, and the predictions say that there won’t be any by February, which is when the seals usually give birth,’ Elena Andriyevskaya, of the local NGO Friends of the Baltic Seal Foundation, told The Moscow Times.

Average temperatures have been around 18°F warmer than usual, and four days in January of this year have been hotter than any day in recorded history for that month.

According to researchers, seals have adapted by instead heading toward coastlines, where they’re exposed to harsh waves, dangerous rock formations, and have less cover from predators.

Earlier this year, the Foundation captured footage of one female seal struggling to reach shore in rough oceans near a lighthouse, illustrating the added stress many of the region’s seals face as they try to mate without the sea ice.

Seals typically begin birthing in February, and researchers expect to have to conduct a much higher than usual number of rescue operations this winter as pups are born in open water and not safely protected burrows in sea ice

Four days in January in St. Petersburg this year have been the hottest ever recorded for the month, which has heavily limited the amount of ice and snow in the region

When birthing season begins in February, the Foundation expects to have to conduct a much higher than usual number of rescues.

They say they have the capacity to rescue around 40 seal pups, but with a population of several thousand grey seals and ring seals in the region that capacity could be quickly exceeded.

‘If nothing changes, we are in store for an epic rescue season,’ Andriyevskaya said.

HOW DO SEALS MATE?

Seals typically mate in the same way as other mammals, through intercourse, insemination, and gestation period leading to a live birth.

During mating season, two seals will copulate, either on a beach or sea ice shelf.

After sperm from one seal fertilizes the egg of another, the seal will become pregnant and gestate for a period of around six weeks.

Pregnant seals will dig out burrows in the beach or sea ice to give birth and protect their newborn pups from predators.

In some instances, seals can also give birth in shallow water.

Seal pups are initially fed through lactation, and it's common for the nursing parent to go without food, living on stored nutrients in their own blubber instead.

Huawei Mate 40 Pro May Include Eight Cameras Overall - Android Headlines

The Huawei P40 series hasn't launched just yet, and yet we already have some Mate 40 series info to share. A new piece of information surfaced, claiming that the Huawei Mate 40 Pro will include eight cameras overall.

This information comes from 91mobiles, and it is based on a design patent. This is a rather 'out there' conclusion based on a patent, but it makes sense, actually.

If you take a look at the provided images below, you'll see a phone that resembles the Huawei Mate 30 Pro quite a bit. Based on these sketches this phone looks like the Mate 30 Pro with two extra cameras.

Patent sketches show the alleged Huawei Mate 40 Pro with eight cameras

You will notice that an extra camera has been crammed on the back, in the middle of the existing four. An additional camera has also been added on the front, inside the notch.

This patent has been filed by Huawei with the German patent agency called 'DPMA', reports the source. That patent does not mention the 'Mate 40 Pro' or 'Mate 40' for that matter. So, we can only guess at this point.

Truth be said, we would have probably never mentioned this patent, if the provided device was not so similar to the Mate 30 Pro. It does seem like either the Mate 40 Pro, or a new version of the Mate 30 Pro. The former is more probable.

The Huawei Mate 30 Pro was announced back in September. It was released in China, but due to the US ban, it did not really make it to a lot of markets around the world. Well, it did not reach them just yet.

Huawei is planning to release its very own alternatives for GMS soon, probably with the Huawei P40 series as the first devices to feature it. With HMS, Huawei will have an alternative for Google's apps and services to offer to its consumers.

That way, the company will be able to offer its new smartphones in a whole lot more markets. That includes both Europe and India. The Huawei P40 series will probably be the devices that debut HMS in global markets, but the Mate 40 series will continue the trend. All that under the assumption that the US ban will still be in place, and Huawei won't be able to use GMS, of course.

The device is expected to resemble the Mate 30 Pro quite a bit

The Huawei Mate 40 Pro, if this is its patent, will resemble the Mate 30 Pro quite a bit. You can expect it to sport a curved display, and be made out of metal and glass.

The Huawei Mate 40 Pro will include two extra cameras, eight overall, and while the notch will still be there, it will be fairly thin. Leica's lenses will almost certainly be a part of the device as well.

If everything goes according to plan, the Huawei Mate 40 series will become official in Q3 2020. The Mate 40 and 40 Pro will probably launch, and we'll guess they'll arrive in September. It is possible that Huawei may push their release date to October or November, though.

In Australia, U.S. firefighters help to battle blazes - Los Angeles Times

It was a rare victory for the seasoned Americans battling flames Down Under.

Beneath a green eucalyptus canopy in the country’s Australian Alps, the continent’s tallest mountain range dividing New South Wales and Victoria, some of America’s most versatile firefighters, mostly from Southern California, are laboring to help the Australians gain the upper hand against their worst fire season ever.

The work, up until Saturday afternoon, had not always been fruitful for these two dozen firefighters, nearly all of them from the Angeles National Forest. Weekly lightning storms have sparked new fires beyond their defensive positions, and even some older fires have spread so quickly they have outrun crews finishing containment lines.

But that afternoon, word crackled over the radio that a containment line they’d dug days before had held up, stopping another blaze’s progress. It was their first success since arriving in Australia on Jan. 8.

“We finally got a win,” said firefighter Benjamin Covault, 40, from McCall, Idaho. “It’s been kicking everyone’s ass.”

“You want the work to be meaningful, but these are huge fires we’re talking about,” said Justine Gude, one of 20 Angeles firefighters in Australia for a monthlong deployment. “You try to take a bite out of it and if it doesn’t work, you pull back and you take another bite. We’re used to it.”

More than 170 U.S. firefighters are in Australia, a country halfway around the world that some of them had never visited. Helping their Aussie counterparts, they have been adjusting to a unique firefighting culture, unusual lingo and landscapes that, while similar in some respects, differ from those of the American West.

The burn line can be seen in the foothills of Mt. Buffalo in Victoria, Australia. A contingent of American hotshot firefighters are there working with Australians to combat wild fires in the Alpine National Park, northeast of Melbourne.

(Carolyn Cole/Los Angeles Times)

Here in the Alpine National Park near Mt. Buffalo, the ground is softer and the shallow-rooted eucalyptus generally are heavier and burn hotter than the conifers and oaks of the Sierra Nevada, creating a tree-fall danger that’s unpredictable and potentially lethal. As crews carve their way through dead standing trees, venomous ants jump onto their wrists and bite while spiders lower themselves onto their backs.

“Crazy spiders, man, big spiders the size of your hand. Big ants, bullet ants and jumping jacks, ‘hoppers,’ they call ‘em,” said Travis Braten, a U.S. Forest Service firefighter based in Shoshone, Wyo., who was working with the Californians over the weekend. “Some guys have seen snakes. I haven’t seen any, which is just fine with me. Sounds like everything is poisonous.”

While these firefighters will bring home anecdotes about everyday oddities — lounging koalas, kangaroos standing by the roadside, brightly colored birds and huge insects — they have been doing the manual labor that comes with an “arduous crew” label, which is how the Angeles National Forest men and women have been categorized while in Australia.

It’s the kind of muscle-aching work that firefighters grind through early in their career until they become more specialized. But because resources are stretched razor-thin in Australia, with so many fires at once, the Forest Service sent over hotshots and veteran firefighters who usually lead their own teams back home and can do it all.

Deployed to Australia, she cleans a chain saw before going out into the field to knock back bush fires in the Alpine National Park. “You try to take a bite out of it and if it doesn’t work you pull back and you take another bite,” she said.

(Carolyn Cole/Los Angeles Times)

“They say it takes a village, where it takes all types to make a successful hand crew,” Gude said, as she stained her hands and nail-polish black with grit, dirt and oil while cleaning a chainsaw. “You need the funny guy, you need the smart guys, you need the strong guys.”

“Me, I’m the strong guy,” Gude said laughing, noting that her body weight was just twice the poundage of the gear and chainsaw she was carrying. “I’m like an ant.”

Gude is one of two female Angeles National Forest firefighters who arrived in the country this month. She’s also part of a cadre called Women in Fire that promotes fire service opportunities for women. She’s seen more female firefighters in Australia than she normally does back in the U.S., she said.

As she dug her fingers into the chainsaw’s muck to clear it out for another day of work Sunday morning, Gude described how she relishes the chance to challenge her male colleagues on female stereotypes in firefighting.

“I had this captain that used to give me a hard time. He used to be like, ‘Ugh, your hands are so ugly.’ I’d be like, ‘You know what? Shut up dude, you don’t say that to any of the other guys. You want me to work like a man, my hands are going to look like a man’s,’ ” she said laughing.

Fires have inundated Australia since November, when a series of lightning storms sparked multiple blazes in the country’s eastern, drought-parched bush lands, known as forests in the United States.

Over several months, the fires have killed at least 29 people while destroying thousands of homes, most of them in New South Wales. The estimated area burned ranges from 12 million to 46 million acres, an area roughly the size of Florida.

While not all towns have been engulfed, despite what social media might suggest, those close to the bush fires have been coping with sporadic evacuations and days and weeks of unhealthy air.

Near Mt. Buffalo, a park roughly 200 miles northeast of Melbourne, the firefighters have made their base camp along the Ovens River tourist town of Bright. With the fires and smoke, businesses have been struggling to stay afloat, but the influx of Americans has been welcomed. Australian officials say the U.S. crews have earned their reputation as among the profession’s best.

“I’ve worked with the Americans before and here there’s no surprises. The arduous crews of America are hard workers,” said David Ross, operations chief for the Abbey Road Fire. “These guys have definitely lived up to … expectations.”

The United States, Australia and New Zealand have helped each other fight fires for more than 15 years, federal officials say. The two countries dispatched crews to U.S. fires in 2018, and the U.S. Forest Service last sent crews Down Under in 2010. There were 178 U.S. personnel in Australia as of Monday, with an additional 40 expected to arrive on Friday, said Forest Service spokeswoman Traci Weaver.

It can take a personal toll on firefighters not fully prepared.

Jonathan Merager, 47, from La Cañada Flintridge, Calif., won’t see his wife and four sons for a month. Twenty years ago he would have gone weeks without speaking with them. But with digital technology, they can chat every day, meaning the separation isn’t as hard as it once was.

“It’s not easy for a lot of folks in this business,” Merager said. “It just takes a lot of coordination, a lot of patience, understanding and empathy.”

When they’re focused on the job at hand, the terrain can seem familiar, the Californians said. The hills are dotted with earthy-green tree canopies that make way to valleys covered with gold, tall grass fields filled with cows.

“Just exchange the eucalyptus with the oak trees out there and it’d look just like home,” said Eduardo Valle, 30, a firefighter from Lancaster, Calif.

But there are subtle things that can remind them that they’re another world away.

“Off the fire line, we say ‘Hey, good morning. Hello,’” Valle said, chuckling. “They say, ‘G’day mate.’ It’s crazy.”

Firefighters say the Australian accents sometimes require greater focus to understand over the radio. The term they use for dead standing trees is “stag” instead of “snag,” and calling in a tanker means requesting a water-carrying fire truck instead of an aircraft dropping water or retardant.

With resources depleted by the number of fires, the Californians have had to adjust to a more defensive strategy from their Australian commanders.

“It’s impressive they get as much done with what they have and that kind of drives their strategies and tactics,” said Leonard Dimaculangan, 41, captain of the Angeles National Forest Texas Canyon hotshot crew.

Burning eucalyptus bark peels off like paper and carries in the wind like a plane. Firefighters have reported spot fires up to 18 miles ahead of a fire’s main front, creating an impossible challenge to contain.

While rain is in the forecast for Victoria, New South Wales could face hot, windy conditions with possible dry lightning in coming days. Fire officials there have warned residents to prepare their homes for additional blazes.

It is these types of firefights that forge relationships, Gude said.

“It’s the most fun you’ll ever have in a [bad] situation,” she said. “Whenever something’s really difficult and you come out the other side with a group of people, it makes you extra close.”

Yankees’ Derek Jeter’s 1st locker mate shares stories from start of Hall of Fame path, from singing Mariah Ca - NJ.com

TAMPA — Sometimes, Derek Jeter would just start rapping.

“Warm it up, Chris!” Jeter would say.

“I’m about to!” Chris Heaps, sitting at the locker to Jeter’s left, would respond in a thick southern drawl. “Warm it up, Jeet!”

“That’s what I was born to do!” Jeter would shoot back, the friends mimicking the lines of Kriss Kross’ hit “Warm It Up.” It was 1992.

Back then, Jeter was mere days into what would become one of the most celebrated and closely watched careers in sports history. It was a tenure as Yankees shortstop filled with glitz and glamor and World Series rings, one that will take its ultimate step when the Baseball Hall of Fame announces his induction Tuesday night.

When Jeter’s bust is unveiled in Cooperstown in July, it’ll be neighbors with not just Yankees greats, but with titans of the game. It’ll be a place that he earned with 3,465 career hits, a .310 batting average, countless iconic moments and such a does-it-the-right-way rep that his “The Captain” title followed him out of the Bronx and around the globe.

But, at the time, Jeter was simply neighbors with Heaps, a 19-year-old second baseman who had been drafted in the 28th round out of community college in Alabama the year prior. Heaps was Jeter’s first locker mate and his first double play partner in pro ball.

Jeter was a chummy neighbor, Heaps recalled in a phone interview Saturday. Now 47 and a baseball coach and history teacher at Russellville High School in Alabama, Heaps still remembers the tiny details of that time.

“So vibrant,” Heaps said of a fresh-out-of-high school Jeter. “So very much humble. Although he was a No. 1 draft pick, he acted like one of the guys.”

Heaps remembered what it was like to share equal space with a player who would go on to become MLB’s face and the celebrity king of New York City.

At Jeter’s locker, Heaps said, he’d have “a picture or two, and a motivational thing or two, and some family stuff.”

“And I remember a picture of Mariah Carey, and him singing, ‘I’ll Be There,’ with his headphones on. Not a great singer, but we laughed and like it.”

Heaps added, “We were side by side and, I'll never forget, he had that picture of Mariah Carey, and I think he said, 'One day, I'm going to marry her.' That was, you know, a teenage thing to say. I think they dated, didn't they?”

They, in fact, did.

That was just one dream Jeter would live out.

He’d also win five championships, including four from 1996 through 2000. He’d run a nonprofit aimed at helping children and he’d end up in movies and on “Saturday Night Live.” After retirement, he became an owner of the Miami Marlins, inspired by late Yankees owner George Steinbrenner.

At first, it wasn’t obvious that Jeter would go on to stardom, despite being a No. 6 overall pick and getting a $800,000 bonus.

When Heaps first laid eyes on Jeter, he was in plain clothes and had just hopped out of a car driven by one of the coaches.

“We were like, ‘Man, that’s the No. 1 pick? That’s the bonus baby?” Heaps said, laughing. “That’s what everybody behind the scenes (was saying). Guys talk.”

Then they saw Jeter play.

“Just going out on a daily basis in those early-morning drills, working from our knees, working on our hands and how to attack ground balls and playing beside him, watching him do what he did,” Heaps said.

“Man, it was it was special. He was just he knew that he was he was going to be a great player. And one thing that surprised us all was, as skinny as he was, you know? That was the biggest thing. The Yankees knew that we got to put some weight on him. We gotta get this guy on a weight-lifting program, and they did. But he had some pop. But, he's 6-foot-3 and 160 (pounds), that's not very thick. But, man, he had some pop in his bat. And turning double plays with him — I would say that that's probably one of my greatest moments as a player. Being out there and just being one of the guys and say, ‘Hey, man, I used to be on the field with him.’”

Jeter and Heaps each struggled that year. Jeter would hit just .202 before getting promoted to Low-A Greensboro. Heaps would hit .172 before calling it a career not long after turning 20.

Heaps had difficulty adjusting to life so far from home and his family and the everyday grind of baseball. He wanted to coach, instead. Years later, Heaps would read in Jeter’s 2001 autobiography, “The Life You Imagine,” about how Jeter went through the same homesickness and his first real struggles playing baseball but never revealed them.

“It was like reading a book about my own life,” Heaps said.

But while Heaps went home, the legend of Jeter took off. Heaps doesn’t regret finishing when he did. He’s coached for the last 24 years and been a part of six high school state championship teams.

Heaps continued to watch Jeter from afar. Thinking over Jeter’s ascension brought back one more fond memory for Heaps.

Not long after Jeter showed up to Tampa for the first time, a crew of player went car shopping at a dealership that’s still about a block from the Yankees’ training facility to this day. Jeter had his eye on a red Mitsubishi GT-3000. A salesman walked up to Jeter.

“Do you know how much this is?” the salesman asked. “You can’t afford that.”

“We all kind of looked at each other,” Heaps recalled. “He obviously didn’t know who Derek Jeter was.”

Bet he knows now.

Excitement at Ouwehands zoo as giant pandas mate at last - DutchNews.nl

Hanging around – one of the Ouwehands pandas. Photo: Robin Utrecht

The two giant pandas on loan to the Ouwehands Dierenpark have finally been mating, almost two years since they arrived at the zoo.

Zookeepers captured the mating on camera. Female pandas are only fertile for three to seven days a year and her urine will now be tested daily to see if she is pregnant. ‘It is going to be an exciting few weeks,’ a zoo spokesman said.

Zoo officials have been doing their best to encouraging Xing Ya and Wu Wen, now both six years old, to mate since they arrived at the specially-built enclosure in May 2017.

They have been spreading each panda’s urine in the other’s sleeping area, and played Xing Ya recordings of other pandas mating. He has also been trained to stand on his back feet so he can do the deed.

‘At the end of last week, we knew Wu Wen was ready and since that moment the keepers have been busy encouraging the animals in a special enclosure,’ the zoo said. In March 2019, hopes of a successful mating where dashed because Xing Ya proved to be too young to mate.
