Taj Gibson is not surprised by the impact his longtime teammate Jimmy Butler has had on the Heat this season.
Miami comes into the Garden for a Sunday matinee as one of the hottest teams in the Eastern Conference, trailing only Milwaukee in the standings with a 27-11 record.
Butler, the four-time All-Star acquired in a sign-and-trade with Philadelphia on a four-year max contract ($142 million) in July, leads the Heat in scoring (20.6 points per game), assists (6.5) and steals (2.0).
“He’s always been capable of having break-out years,” said Gibson, a teammate with the Bulls from 2011-17 and with Minnesota from 2017-19. “He works extremely hard and is a great leader. He’s all about winning.
“And that’s what they are doing. They are focusing on winning and doing the right kind of things and right kind of habits. I’m happy for him.”

The Heat defeated the Knicks, 129-115, in Miami on Dec 20. They also are receiving big years from undrafted rookie guard Kendrick Nunn (15.3 ppg) and former Kentucky big man Bam Adebayo (15.9 points and 10.5 rebounds per game).
“Really, it’s their balance. They’re good on both sides of the ball. Their execution on both sides of the ball has been outstanding,” Knicks interim coach Mike Miller said. “I think the biggest thing you can say, the biggest compliment you can pay [Butler], is that he impacts the game without even scoring. We played down there, and he was moving the ball, he was defending, he was executing things off the ball that created offense. So he’s a guy that knows what it takes to win games.”
Julius Randle (personal reasons), Reggie Bullock (contused left thigh), Frank Ntilikina (sore groin) and Mitchell Robinson (sprained left big toe) have been listed as probable for Sunday’s game. Marcus Morris (sore neck) and Dennis Smith Jr. (strained left oblique) are questionable.
